The beloved baritone Thomas Hampson, an international opera star with a passion for American music, kicks off the Festival with his bountiful Song of America: Beyond Liberty, which traces the development of American song from the 1700s to the present day. Joined by acclaimed pianist Lara Downes, the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, and a chamber ensemble, Hampson will sing and talk about psalm settings and African-American spirituals, Gershwin, Copland, and other defining American composers and poets. Pairing music, poetry, rhetoric, and history, Hampson introduces audiences to his unique examination of Americana.
Castello di Amorosa
Rising above the hills in the Napa Valley is Castello di Amorosa, which translates to the “castle of love” in Italian. Castello di Amorosa is an authentically-styled, thirteenth century Tuscan castle winery replete with high walls, five defensive towers, and over 30 acres of estate vineyards. It was built over a 14-year period by Dario Sattui, a fourth generation winemaker and owner of V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena, California.
