Festival Premieres: Pied Piper Fantasy featuring Maxim Rubtsov

American composer John Corigliano will be here when the formidable Russian flutist Maxim Rubtsov premieres a new arrangement of Corigliano’s Pied Piper Fantasy with members of the Russian National Orchestra. This beguiling 1993 concerto is based partly on Robert Browning’s classic tale, “The Pied Piper of Hamelin.”

Corigliano says of Maxim Rubtsov, “He’s the perfect Pied Piper. With his movie star looks and charisma, and his magnificent playing and acting of the part, the legendary piper becomes alive for all to see.” This new arrangement is by the versatile composer and conductor Andrey Rubtsov. Corigliano’s lyrical and evocative “Snapshot, circa 1909” for string quartet rounds out today’s program.
